At Swim-Two-Birds Meeting

Date: February 27, 2009
Location: M.J. O’Connor’s downtown
Present: Rachel, Anne, Wendy, Beth, Cynthia, Donna, Manda

Donna was 30 minutes late due to a mysterious disabled train on the Green Line. Manda was 35 minutes late due to driving and taking a wrong exit.

Only Rachel and Donna finished the book. Not my best pick, although I did let people vote this time.

Anne, Beth, and Manda tried to read it and got about 50 pages in. Cynthia couldn’t get past the first 5 difficult pages. Beth had the same trouble but gave it a second try.

Manda wanted credit for reading the introduction. Beth read the intro. too and informed us all that she knows a lot about “Flann O’Brien.”

Rachel thought the book was very funny, but she’s not sure she understood it all. She also thought it read quickly.

Manda was slowed down by the historical characters in the book, but she liked the narrator and the parts about his life.

I thought it was very creative and liked how he combined so many genres of literature. I agreed with Rachel and thought it was funny and also definitely did not “get” all of it.

Since no one else read much of the book, we moved on to more interesting topics such as Wendy’s latest dating stories (“let us indulge in a night of passion!”) and the fact that former member Libby is now on facebook.

Steven then crashed book club and Anne has the documentation to prove it (i.e. photos).

Lastly, Wendy’s good-luck Thai phallus was rubbed on Manda’s lottery ticket and on Steven.
