Fun Home

We discussed Fun Home at the Cambridge Commons and Anne, Beth (me!), Cynthia, Donna, Manda, Rachel and Wendy were present and accounted for. I chose the restaurant so we could eat outsde and have sliders but we couldn't sit outside because the picnic tables were too small and Wendy and I were horribly disappointed in the sliders. They were dry, overcooked and they didn't have any special toppings. But the fried pickles and the sweet potato fries were very good. Still, I don't think I will be going back there anytime soon.

The book itself was much better than the food. I think everyone finished it and I think they liked it or at least found it interesting. That is more than we can say about the sliders. I had a notebook with me but I didn't take any notes! We all agreed that we sometimes had trouble understanding her references to other works of literature like Proust, Wlder and Joyce. I asked if anyone thought that her father really killed himself or maybe it could have been an accident. Nope, everyone pretty much felt that he had killed himself. Case closed. I totally loved it and I read it over a 36 hour period. I felt that it was really dense and I read t too fast, it was like candy. I meant to read it again before we met, but I only got 1/4 of the way through. It was interesting to see Allison Bechdel us the same style as Dykes to Watch Out For in this longer form. She didn't really modify it at all, not that I could tell, but it still worked. I think it it helped to balance the serious, dark material of the book.

After, we took a lot of pictures in front of the Iguana Mural outisde the the Lizard Lounge. We did this in the hopes that Rachel and Anne would be inspired to join Facebook and use the photos for their profiles. After, Wendy and I (Beth!) walked over to Burrdicks for some hot chocolate but we gabbed and so long at Manda's car while I flirted with the little boy in the window of the restaurant that Burrdicks was closed by the time we got there. As I type this, I am reliving the disapointment all over...

Over the next few days a book club miracle happened... Anne and Rachel joined facebook! Now we have all current bookclub members on Facebook and even a coule of alums!

Tonight I was on Facebook checking out what my friends were up to and I noticed that Donna's status read: I wonder if bookclub blog will ever be updated. I had totally forgotten until I saw that! So we can thank Facebook and Donna for this blog. Amen.

Those sliders were SO disappointing...but I think that's because they called them sliders and not mini-burgers! We need to plan a visit to the Blarney Stone in Dorchester for anyone interested...best mini-burgers in Boston, in my humble opinion! They also know my drink of choice when I walk in the door...what does that say!?!?
